Protokol dan kodek dalam H.323

H.323 adalah suatu spesifikasi sistem yang menggambarkan penggunaan beberapa ITU-T dan protokol IETF. Protokol yang merupakan inti dari protkol H.323 antara lain :

H.225.0 Registration, Admission and Status (RAS), Protokol yang digunakan oleh H.323 endpoints dan gate keeper untuk resolusi alamat dan layanan control .

H.225.0 Call Signaling, digunakan oleh  dua entitas H.323 untuk membangun proses komunikasi

Kontrol H.245 protokol untuk komunikasi multimedia, yang menggambarkan pesan dan prosedur yang digunakan untuk pertukaran resource, membuka dan menutup saluran logis untuk audio, video dan data, kontrol dan indikasi.

Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), yang digunakan untuk mengirim atau menerima informasi multimedia (suara, video, atau teks) antara dua entitas.

Banyak juga menerapkan sistem H.323 protokol lain yang didefinisikan dalam berbagai Rekomendasi ITU-T untuk memberikan layanan tambahan dukungan atau memberikan fungsi lain untuk pengguna. 

Seri H.235 H.323 menjelaskan keamanan di dalam, termasuk keamanan untuk kedua sinyal dan media.

H.239 menjelaskan penggunaan aliran ganda dalam videoconference, biasanya satu untuk video langsung, yang lainnya untuk gambar diam.

Seri H.450 menggambarkan berbagai layanan tambahan.

Seri H.460 mendefinisikan ekstensi opsional yang mungkin bisa dilaksanakan oleh sebuah endpoint atau Gatekeeper, termasuk ITU-T, Rekomendasi H.460.17 H.460.18, dan H.460.19 untuk terjemahan alamat jaringan (NAT) / Firewall (FW) traversal.

Selain mereka Rekomendasi ITU-T, H.323 mengimplementasikan berbagai IETF Permintaan Comments (RFC) untuk media transportasi dan packetization media, termasuk Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP).
